Early this morning

A family of quails,
Marched across the yard

Head high, chest forward

Inline and regimental

Down the hill in sunshine

Attention getting, yet fast enough

To avoid capture, and soon under
The lilac bushes and gone.

Like hurried soldiers, on a mission

Leaving only memory of their presence

Now here, now gone.
