OFFSPRING

OFFSPRING

The primordial task of all living

Is to conceive and produce offspring

Feed and protect them at all cost

Progeny ensures not only lineage, but

Perpetuation and preservation of life and nature

The compulsion is so ingrained that

Failure is unacceptable, and try and try, all will. 

A lone goose migrated from a neighbor to 

Our chicken coop a while back and laid an egg

Roosting on it for some time

Until one day, the infertile egg broke 

The disappointment in her was profound

Amazing and concerning

Days later she laid another egg and proceeded

To carefully roost and care for it.

Not wanting her disappointed again, I bought

A gosling from a farm store and

Carefully replaced her egg with the chick

Her overwhelming reaction

Brought us all to tears.

The upbringing of our offspring is

The pride of parenthood

For, as the African philosophy of Ubuntu

Says; “We are because you are!”

As parents, we are successful when

Our children end up better than us.
